Ctenanthe are related to Calathea, Maranta and Stromanthe. All have beautiful decorative foliage and are sometimes called Prayer Plants due to the way the leaves close upwards at dusk in a prayer-like fashion. The Ctenanthe 'Compactstar' has silver-green leaves with a lovely dark green, herring-bone striped pattern and purple undersides. They have the added benefit of being great air purifiers.
They prefer medium to bright light out of direct sun and enjoy warm, humid conditions so is ideal in a bathroom or kitchen. Alternatively, put a tray of moistened pebbles under the pot to raise humidity.
Spring/summer water when the top inch of soil has dried out. Autumn/winter reduce watering frequency. Allow the top 2 inches to dry out.
