The aptly named 'Buddha Belly' Jatropha podagrica with its bulbous stem that stores water, so it can survive drought conditions. It has large lobed leaves and coral-red flowers which last 20 weeks!
Care Tips:
🌤️ Prefers a couple of hours of direct sun each day, so an east- or west-facing window would be ideal.
💧Drought tolerant, allow the soil to completely dry out between waterings. Check more regularly in warmer months and leave dry for through winter.
🥱Goes through a dormant period in winter, it's natural for some (or all) of its leaves slowly yellow and drop off. New leaves will form in spring.
☠️Poisonous, if ingested, keep away from pets that like to nibble.
Interestingly there are many traditional uses for the plant in folk medicine which are being researched for use today. The stem bark contains a mix of chemicals with potential medicinal properties, including antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, although the plant is considered toxic, so best leave it to the experts!
